Long awaited and rumoured, rendered images and concepts have been floating around for the last 12 years. However, the F-Type’s time has come and it is now on sale. This 2-seater sports car boasts an aluminium chassis, is lighter than the XK and at launch will be offered in 3 different variations, the F-Type, F-Type S and the F-Type V8 S. All 3 engines are supercharged, the entry level F-Type pumps out 340 BHP from its 3.0 litre V6, the S has the same capacity but is tuned to 380 BHP and the range-topping V8 boats a colossal 495 BHP. All 3 models are initially to be offered with a ZF 8 speed automatic gearbox.
The styling of the F-Type is typically Jaguar, however the car is more modern and youthful than other models in Jaguar’s range as the car is aimed at a younger demographic, people less concerned about whether or not the golf clubs fit in the boot.
The F-Type is fitted with a soft top hood which can be raised or lowered in just 12 seconds up to speeds of 30 mph so the is no need to pull over when the rain starts! The hood’s multi-layer lining is also fitted with Thinsulate technology providing great sound proofing and thermal qualities. The F-Type is fitted with retractable spoiler which is delpyed at 60 mph to decrease aerodynamic lift and lowers flush to the body at 40 mph automatically.
The doors of the F-Type are also alive with technology, the door handles remain flush with the body until the car us unlocked or the passenger touches the handle, at which point they deploy allowing the passenger to enter the vehicle. Once the car is moving they automatically retract back into the body work.
Other enhancements to the F-Type include stop-start technology, when the car is stationary the engine automatically shuts off and restarts again as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the accelerator. Jaguar stated that this boosts the fuel economy of the car by 5%. The F-Type’s exhaust system is fitted with valves which automatically open when the engine revs to 3,000 RPM enhancing the engine sound, once cruising speed is reach the valves close allowing for a quieter and more comfortable engine note. This is a standard feature of the V6 S and V8 S, it is an optional feature on the V6.
The Jaguar F-Type will be on sale from summer 2013, Prices start at £58,520 for the V6, £67,520 for the V6 S and £79,985 for the top of the range V8 S.
